There are thousands of articles, books, magazines, TV shows, fitness centers and people in general telling you which exercises to do, what supplements to take, what equipment you need to lose weight and get healthy. You can turn on the TV at any time of the day and see infomercial about exercise and losing weight.

But from what I can see, which exercises to use and how to do them is not the most important aspect of the problem. To me what is most important is motivation to exercise and eating healthy. Let’s face it. How much knowledge does it take to put down the fast food burger and opt for home cooked fish and some veggies instead? How much knowledge does it take to turn off the TV and go for a walk?

It doesn’t take a bunch of expensive equipment, or inexpensive equipment for that matter. It takes change. Several things have to happen in order for this change to take place.

Here you will find my twelve-step program for changing your life to facilitate a healthier lifestyle, and of course, lose weight.

First, and the most obvious, we need to realize that in order to get healthy and fit, we need to change our lives. Most people don’t like change, especially when it comes to changing who we are. Committing to yourself to make this change is the first step towards your new life.

Second, we need to realize this is not a short term change. This is a change that we will need to stick with for the rest of our lives. Understanding that this is not temporary and again, admitting this to your self, and believing it, will make this change easier in the end. What makes the change impossible to achieve is when we lie to ourselves.

If you have not fully committed yourself to the first two steps, stop now, pick up the TV Guide and a bag of chips, and figure out what shows you’re going to watch tonight. Because, if you try to continue without making this commitment, you will only be wasting your time. I hope that emphasizes how important the first two steps are.

Third is figuring out how we got where we are and what needs to be done to change it. It’s best to actually make a list of what behaviors we have that got us here. Remember, the more honest you are, the better the result will be. It could be things like, you don’t like to see food wasted, or you won’t miss a single episode of CSI followed by the Soprano’s followed by whatever. Maybe eating makes you feel good when you feel depressed. Go back as far as you need to in order to get a complete list of behaviors that caused you to be over weight.

Now that you have your list, step four is to decide which of the behaviors are easy to change and which ones will be more difficult. Turning of the TV and doing something with the kids, that’s an easy one. Not eating to make yourself feel better when you’re blue, that’s a bit tougher.
