If you need a reason to lose weight look in the mirror! Or try last year’s summer dress on! Think of why you should lose weight, or why you want to lose weight. How badly do you want it? If you can’t do it, then obviously not badly enough. A time-line milestone such as a wedding is a good reason, particularly if it is far enough in the future to enable you to realistically achieve what you want to achieve. Set yourself targets for each week, or more realistically, each month.

You must have the right reason to lose weight for yourself – not for somebody else. If somebody tells you that you would look better if you ‘lost some weight’, that’s not a good enough reason for you to want to lose weight. If ‘looking different’ is the price you have to pay to have certain people as friends then you are better off without them.

If you want to find some ‘willpower ‘ to lose weight, then look at the longer term. Don’t look for instant weight loss, because it will not happen – at least not permanently. You might lose a few fast pounds through excess water loss from fatty tissues but nothing long-term. Permanent weight loss means a change of lifestyle, perhaps from a sedentary life to a more active one. Expend more calories every day, and you will likely find a gradual loss in weight until you hit a plateau where your energy intake through your diet equals your energy usage through your metabolism and daily activity.

That’s when you have to up your activity rate to get back to losing weight again. Your metabolism gets used to a certain rate of energy expenditure and intake, and you then have to change that. It’s always better to increase your rate of calorie usage than reduce your calorie intake, assuming of course that your diet is already a healthy one and neither short of nutrition nor too heavy in fats and carbohydrates.

A high protein diet, such as the Atkins diet, will work, but it will also leave you short of nutrition. All high protein diets require you spend money on supplements to make up for a lack of fruit and vegetables. So avoid these diets unless you also take your five a day.
