Spinach lasagna, for example, can be a big hit, and there are many recipes available to prepare low-fat, lower-calorie spinach lasagna. Homemade pizza topped with loads of fresh vegetables is another favorite. Stir-fry is another kid-friendly food that is popular and fits in nicely with a healthy weight loss plan. Involve your children in the preparation of the food and they will be more likely to try, and like, the healthier meals.

Of course, in the beginning, it will be tough. You may find yourself preparing two meals, one for yourself and one for the rest of the family. Another option is to eat much smaller portions of the same thing everyone else is eating. Both have their benefits, and maybe some combination of the two is the ideal.

For example, prepare something that your family is accustomed to eating. Prepare the dish with a few subtle, healthier changes. Add a typical side and one healthy side. Then you can have the same meal as them, just with smaller portions, and they won’t feel like you are forcing your dietary changes on them. Slowly teach your family the importance of eating smaller portions and healthier food, and eventually they will come around and actually prefer your new way of eating. Then it will become their way of eating, and their kids’ way of eating.

When your kids can eat raw broccoli, raw bell peppers, and actually prefer a salad to a pizza or a hamburger, you have outdone yourself. If they only make it to steamed veggies, occasional salads, and display some portion control, then you have accomplished your goal.
