Let’s face it, trying to lose weight over 40 can seem like a daunting task. I myself am 41 years old, and I have found losing all of my excess weight to be quite a challenge. However, in this article I am going to share with you 3 tips that a 41 year old mother of 3 used to lose weight. If I can do this, there is no reason that you cannot do it!

How to Lose Weight Over 40

Losing weight over 40 is not rocket science, but it does take a bit more discipline than it would for the average 20 year old. When you get to be 40 years old, losing weight is a great challenge because of many factors. Generally speaking, people are not as active, and therefore their metabolism slows down considerably. Someone over 40 who is looking to lose weight cannot eat that cheeseburger that he or she used to eat just 5-10 years ago.

You see, to lose weight over 40 you have to minimize the amount of fat that is stored in your fat cells. You cannot get rid of fat cells, but you can shrink them. Shrinking those fat cells is an essential weight loss element, especially for those over 40 who are looking to burn fat.

As we go past age 40 our bodies begin to adapt to a higher weight. Our bodies are designed to maintain a certain weight for survival, which is why losing fat is difficult, and becomes even more so after 40. Did you know that eating just an extra 100 calories per day can potentially cause you to gain over 10 pounds in a 12 month period?

Here is what you can do about it:

The first thing that anyone over 40 needs to do in order to lose weight is to practice eating more frequently. This seems counterproductive, but it has been scientifically proven that eating smaller meals or snacks throughout the day as opposed to 2 or 3 big meals can significantly increase your chances of successful fat loss. So, eat a healthy, low calorie snack in the morning, and then do the same in the afternoon.

In addition to healthy and frequent snacking, you must take part in what I call “fun exercise.” Exercise is simply torture for most people, but it does not have to be! Find something that you enjoy doing, and find a way to do it in a fashion that burns calories.

Here is an example:

My husband works at a golf club, and as an assistant pro part of his job is to help the cart attendants pull out carts in the morning. My husband is 43, and he decide that he was going to get a workout in every morning using this activity! What he does is pull a golf cart to the front, and then jog back to the cart shed to get the next cart. One morning he added it up, and found out that he was getting in a half-mile jog each morning.

Me personally, I enjoy playing in the yard with my dog. If you take your dog outside (or to the park) and play with them for 30 minutes, you will get a great workout! These are just two ideas to help people learn how to lose weight over 40.
